Mari State University (MarSU) recently hosted a thought-provoking lecture by its Rector, Prof. Mikhail Shvetsov N, a lecturer with the Russian society Znanie. Addressing an audience of international students, Prof. Shvetsov spoke on the impactful topic of “India in the Second World War,” offering a unique perspective on the historical bonds between India and Russia.
Prof. Shvetsov provided an insightful account of India’s significant role in the Allied victory during World War II. He paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the over 2.5 million Indian soldiers and civilians who participated, many of whom served on European fronts. “The memory of this unites our peoples,” he emphasized. “It’s especially meaningful to reflect on this during the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War — our shared triumph.”
Students listened intently as the Rector recounted stories of heroism and endurance, highlighting the bravery of Indian troops who fought alongside British and Commonwealth forces. He stressed that this shared history of struggle and resilience continues to serve as a foundation for mutual respect and cooperation between Russia and India.
“This isn’t just about history,” said Prof. Shvetsov. “It’s about understanding, respect, and recognizing the common chapters of our past.”
He also underscored the importance of such events in fostering unity within Mari State University’s diverse student community. “We are proud that our university attracts young people from around the world. We want everyone to feel at home here — to embrace our values and our history, where true greatness lies,” he remarked.
The lecture was particularly meaningful as it coincided with the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in the Great Patriotic War, a powerful reminder of the collective efforts that shaped modern history. Through such commemorations, MarSU continues to champion international friendship, cultural exchange, and a deeper understanding of global interconnectedness.
The event concluded with a lively Q\&A session, where students expressed their gratitude for the Rector’s insights and reflected on the importance of honoring the contributions of all nations in shaping world history.
